Toya Maha was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1991 and is an artist based in Kyoto. She completed the Master’s program in Ceramics at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts, in 2017. Regarding the act of firing clay and sand—a practice dating back to the Jomon period—as “a means of leaving traces of time,” her practice centers on giving form to things that may be lost or that ought to be kept, and delivering them to the distant future. She has also participated in residencies in Indonesia, China, and Taiwan. Her works are held in collections including those of the Catcher Foundation and Tainan National University of the Arts. She is currently undertaking the project “Hi no Aida (Between the Fires)” (supported by Arts Support Kansai).
