Oasis Ⅲ
2024 Urushi lacquer, Kyocera opal, silver powder, linen 31.3×105×32cm
Notsu Kanon, born in 1997, is a lacquer artist based in Hyogo Prefecture. Centered on forms made in kanshitsu (dry lacquer) using hemp cloth and lacquer, she creates works that combine Kyoto Opal (synthetic opal), silver powder, and silver leaf. “Oasis III” (2025), exhibited here, is a large work over one meter wide, in which, within an expansive form reminiscent of a boat or vessel, the deep luster of lacquer resonates with the opal’s play-of-color. Through themes evoking natural phenomena and traditional designs—such as the plant-inspired object “Kabutomaru – Nishiki –” and the undulating “Fūrō (Wind and Waves)”—she pursues the light, free-flowing forms unique to dry lacquer.
