Matsumoto Michiko was born in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, in 1967, and is a shippō (enamel) artist based in the same city. Honing her skills in enamel—a field rarely practiced within the prefecture—she was first selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1999. She has received the New Artist Prize and the Prince Takamatsu Memorial Prize at the same exhibition, as well as the Kaneshige Toyo Prize and other awards at its Chugoku Regional Exhibition. In works such as vessels formed solely of vitreous enamel—made by firing enamel onto a metal body and then removing the body—the light-transmitting layers of colored enamel transform the vessel itself into a vessel of light. She received the Shimane Prefecture Culture Encouragement Award in 2020 and is a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association.
