Wakabayashi Kazue was born in Tokyo in 1968 and is a ceramic artist based in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1993, she completed her Master’s degree in Ceramics at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, where she studied under Asano Yo. She graduated from the National Institute for Ceramics, Faenza, Italy, in 1998, and continued to make ceramics there until 2001. Through “Ginshitsusai,” her unique technique fusing majolica methods with overglaze painting, silver coloring, and lacquer, she pursues the depth created by layers of color. Her works, in which patterns shimmer on porcelain as layers of silver and color, combine splendor with serenity. Her awards include the Grand Prize at the 10th Kikuchi Biennale (2023), the Tokyo Metropolitan Governor’s Prize at the 65th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (2025), and the 20th Paramita Ceramic Art Prize (2026). She is a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association.
