Takasuka Katsura was born in Tokyo in 1986 and currently resides in Hachioji City, Tokyo. Since his student days, he has been creating works with the theme “what comes from earth goes back to earth.” Takasuka is interested in primitive textiles and traditional techniques and materials from various regions of Japan, working with textile dyeing pieces that use fibers such as paper mulberry, hemp, ramie, and banana fiber, as well as natural dyes and earth. In recent years, he has presented works that reexamine the relationship between earth, plants, and people, including exhibitions such as “Thinking Earth code -Amami-.” Using mud dyeing textile culture and region-specific materials as subjects, he works on the inheritance and reinterpretation of regional culture and techniques from an anthropological perspective. Additionally, Takasuka has directed numerous exhibitions and regional projects, with major activities including ‘Hataori-machi no Hata-shirushi,’ ‘Rapier Ribbon,’ ‘Hataori-gaku,’ and ‘FUJI TEXTILE WEEK.’
