Yagi Mariyo

Yagi Mariyo graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts. She is internationally active in environmental art and fiber art using rope as a medium. In the 1970s, Yagi studied under Isamu Noguchi, and from the 1980s she has created landscape works in public spaces both domestically and internationally. In the 1990s, she advocated “Rope-ology.” She participated in the United Nations Development Programme Global Forum and has promoted activities connecting regions and nature, including Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake recovery efforts. She has received numerous awards including the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Merit Award and the Italian Good Design Award. Her works are held in collections at museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Crafts Gallery in Tokyo and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
