2005 Jute 98×98×17cm
Fiber artist. Serino Naoko was born in Fukuoka in 1962 and graduated from the Department of Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Kyushu Sangyo University. She lives near the coast of Tsuyazaki in Fukutsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, where she continues to create while feeling the light and wind. Her material is jute. Making use of its natural color, she loosens the jute into fibers and shapes it into light, three-dimensional forms that hold light and air within. Her delicate yet dignified forms evoke a cycle of being born from nature and returning to it. She was selected as one of 30 Japanese artists for “Fiber Futures: Japan’s Textile Pioneers,” which opened at JAPAN SOCIETY in New York in 2011 and traveled to nine cities in eight countries over six years. Her awards include the Silver Prize at the KAJIMA Sculpture Competition.
