Goto Hideki was born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1973. He is a ceramic artist based in Kasahara-cho, Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. He studied ceramics in the advanced course of Tajimi Technical High School. Building on Shino, a representative form of Mino tea ceramics, he has expanded its framework while returning to Shino’s origin: firing clay coated with feldspar. In his representative “Watatsumi” (God of the Sea) series, bold, undulating clay forms resonate with the richly varied surface of Shino, evoking natural scenery such as waves, reefs, coral, and snow. His works stand out for a presence in which ruggedness and stillness coexist.
