Nawa Kohei is a sculptor, director of Sandwich Inc., and professor at Kyoto University of the Arts. Born in 1975, he is based in Kyoto. Nawa completed his doctoral program in sculpture at Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2003. He founded “Sandwich” in 2009. Focusing on the “surface” of sculpture as an interface connecting to the senses, Nawa continues his creative work centered around the concept of “cell.” Through flexible interpretation of the definition of sculpture, he has created perceptual experiences that reveal the physical properties of materials to viewers. In recent years, Nawa has also undertaken architectural projects such as the art pavilion “Kohei.” Since 2015, he has created a trilogy of performance works – “VESSEL,” “Mist,” and “Planet [wanderer]” – in collaboration with Belgian choreographer/dancer Damien Jalet. In 2018, Nawa’s sculpture “Throne” was specially exhibited inside the Pyramid at the Louvre Museum in France. In 2023, his 25-meter-tall outdoor sculpture “Ether (Equality)” was permanently installed on Seguin Island in the Seine River, France.
