Matsuzaki Shinpei was born in Tokyo in 1981. In 2007, he graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo. Currently, he is active as an artist in Nishihara, Okinawa Prefecture, and serves as a lecturer at Okinawa Prefectural University of the Arts in Lacquerware field. Matsuzaki creates craft and painting works using the traditional lacquer techniques of “Raden” (pearl inlay) and “Maki-e” (sprinkled picture), with a theme of colors and impressions drawn from landscapes. In recent years, he has been creating works using Ryukyu Raden.
In 2024, Matsuzaki held his major solo exhibition “Shinpei Matsuzaki Lacquer Art Exhibition: Stone-Paved Roads and Shikuwasa” (Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store). His major awards include Excellence Prize and Audience Prize, “FACE2019” in 2019; Asahi Shimbun Prize, 71st Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 2024; Okinawa Times Art Selection Encouragement Prize in 2025. His works are held in collection in National Crafts Museum, Ishikawa Wajima Urushi Art Museum, etc.
