Nakamura is the second son of a three-generational kiln family in Kanazawa. Adding a new interpretation to the Kanazawa-style “Rinpa” developed by his father, Umeyama, he presented the “Girigiri Utsuwa” series at his first solo exhibition at Wako Hall in 1991. He has been exploring and expanding domains related to the relationship between “utsuwa” and space ever since. In 2020, he participated in the production of “A Tea House in Fluctuation”, which won the Grand Prize at the International Competition of the Berlin National Museum of Asian Art. He created “Roji”, the outdoor garden space, as well as “Tokokamachi”, an ornamental wooden bar for the tea house, with pottery. In recent years, he has been involved in architectural spaces extensively. His works have been exhibited at various venues including the 1st Triennale of KOGEI in Kanazawa in 2010 (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa), “Designing Nature: The Rinpa Aesthetic in Japanese Art” in 2012 (Metropolitan Museum of Art), and “Innovative Craft: Tradition and Avant-Garde, and Contemporary” in 2017 (National Crafts Museum of National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo). His works are held in collection at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Crafts Museum of National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
